Bringing Nebraska Farms Online
Connecting farmers and local producers with customers who are already searching online for the products they sell.

Having recently arrived in Lincoln, Nebraska, from South Africa, I brought with me many years of experience in website design, e-commerce and digital marketing, as well as recent experience working on a small Chicken and Dairy farm.
While working as a farm manager, I had the opportunity to combine my background in online banking and e-commerce development with my practical knowledge of farm operations to build an online store for the owners’ farm stall, selling their dairy products directly to customers. It was an exciting project that gave me valuable insight into how a farm website could become far more than just an online presence. Properly developed, it could serve as a powerful business tool to promote the farm, build direct customer relationships, streamline sales, and create new opportunities for business growth.
After arriving in Lincoln, I was particularly impressed to see large retailers such as Walmart and Hy-Vee embracing online ordering through their websites.
Something Interesting About Online Shopping
What particularly surprised me was that many of the products advertised and available for purchase online are not necessarily displayed or stocked in the physical stores.
In other words, these retailers are actively encouraging customers to use their websites to find and purchase products that may not be available on the store shelves.
The customer doesn't always have to find the product on the shelf. They can find it online.
What I Discovered About Farm E-Commerce
This inspired me to engage with the neighboring farming community in Nebraska and to better understand how local farming operations work, from production all the way through to the customer's table.
What I discovered after building the website for Valley View Farm, a small dairy farm, was particularly interesting.
After many years of creating websites for businesses selling different types of products and services, I found that the farm's website had a particularly strong potential for organic visibility in Google search.
People Are Already Searching for Farm Products
The reason is quite simple: the products farmers sell are products that people are already actively searching for online.
Customers looking for fresh, locally produced food may use words such as "near me", "local", "fresh" and "farm" in their searches.
Examples of What Customers May Search For
- farm fresh produce
- local farm produce
- fresh produce near me
- farm fresh eggs
- fresh eggs near me
- local vegetables
- organic vegetables
- farm fresh milk
- local beef
- grass-fed beef
- farm fresh meat
- buy produce directly from farmers
- local farm products
- farm products near me
- farm stand near me
- buy fresh produce online
Where E-Commerce and SEO Come Together
This is where I believe farming and e-commerce can work particularly well together. A website is not simply advertising a business; it is presenting products that people are already searching for.
With well-structured website content, properly presented products and good search engine optimisation, a farm can create opportunities to appear naturally in Google's organic search results when customers are looking for the products it sells.
This does not mean that specialised SEO tools or Google Ads are never useful. They can certainly help increase visibility and reach. However, my experience with the Valley View Farm website showed me that a farm's products themselves can provide an excellent foundation for an effective organic search strategy.
Why This Matters to Nebraska Farmers
Nebraska has a strong farming community, producing a wide variety of products that consumers may already be searching for online.
The opportunity is to connect those searches with the farms and producers who actually supply the products.
An e-commerce website can provide that connection by allowing a customer to discover a local farm through Google, learn about its products and then place an order online.
The Customer Is Searching. The Farmer Has the Product.
The website can bring the two together.
That's the opportunity I see for Nebraska farmers and local producers: using a professional website and e-commerce to connect great local products with the customers who are already looking for them.
